A provincial benefit plan supporting healthcare workers turned to Watson for long-term support in clarifying governance roles, equipping trustees, and preparing for the future.
Context
Our client is a provincial benefit plan that delivers health and welfare benefits to employees of healthcare providers. Its work is grounded in care and service to plan members and shaped by a complex, values-driven governance context. The plan’s governance environment included overlapping roles. Many individuals served as trustees, employers, and plan members, creating challenges in role clarity and decision-making.
With plan member needs evolving and the external landscape shifting, the organization sought to clarify governance expectations, strengthen its board’s effectiveness, and prepare for long-term strategic direction.
Our Work Together
We began with a governance review to support the board’s development and inform strategic planning. From there, we created a customized, online foundational governance education program for all new and existing trustees. This gave board members a consistent understanding of fiduciary roles and governance fundamentals.
We also facilitated a series of live, interactive workshops with the board and management team to explore more complex governance issues and foster constructive dialogue around critical topics. These sessions created space for shared reflection on board dynamics, strategic priorities, and stakeholder needs.
Watson then conducted a board evaluation to assess governance readiness for upcoming plan changes. We continue to support this client with additional governance education and strategic planning facilitation.
Our Impact
Trustees report greater clarity in their governance roles and feel more confident bringing a strategic lens to their work. As a result of the education and evaluation processes, the board and management team have redesigned meeting agendas and materials to enable more future-focused conversations.
Watson’s support has also helped the organization develop a governance mandate and roles document that outlines expectations across key leadership functions. Trustees now have shared language and tools to navigate complex discussions in a way that prioritizes the long-term interests of the plan and its members.
Board discussions have evolved beyond traditional oversight to include forward-looking exploration of trends, risks, and opportunities, laying a strong foundation for the development of the plan’s first strategic plan and upcoming enterprise risk review.
