Boards often struggle with how to do justice to their role in overseeing culture, leadership, and talent.
I appreciated a recent article about board accountability that spoke to the need for metrics (as well as the need to go beyond them) – and the Appendix gives a head start on what you could measure.
However – I’m a believer that it is far more valuable to review fewer metrics thoughtfully and critically rather than seeing as many as possible, at least at the board level.
Boards need select data, presented carefully so that the headlines come through clearly (and without distortion). They don’t need a laundry list of things that could be measured, they need a curated list and a highly visual way to quickly absorb key messages and identify important questions.
